Trump salutes ‘fearless’ military, police dogs on K-9 Veterans Day: ‘canine courage’

President Donald Trump on Thursday paid tribute to the courageous canines who selflessly defend our citizens and homeland. March 13 marks National K-9 Veterans Day, a day dedicated to honoring the bravery and service of military and police dogs.

In a message commemorating the day, President Trump highlighted the invaluable role that these fearless four-legged fighters play in protecting America. These dedicated working dogs, with over 30,000 in the military and 1,600 actively serving, provide frontline support to U.S. service members. Trained in detecting explosives, drugs, and assisting in search and rescue operations, these canine warriors are an essential part of our national security.

One famous military working dog, Conan, a 50-combat-mission veteran named after late-night talk show host Conan O’Brien, gained national attention for helping track down and eliminate Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in Syria. Injured during the mission, Conan made a full recovery and was later adopted by his former handler.

Hurricane, a Belgian Malinois and the most decorated K-9 in U.S. history, passed away in February after more than a decade of service in the Secret Service. Known for taking down an intruder who breached the White House gate in 2014, Hurricane received numerous accolades, including the Secret Service Award for Meritorious Service and the Department of Homeland Security Secretary’s Award for Valor.

Other notable K-9 veterans mentioned by President Trump include Cairo, a SEAL Team Six operator who played a crucial role in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, and Rex, a Marine veteran who saved countless lives by detecting explosives in combat in Iraq. Marine Corps Cpl. Megan Leavey, whose heroic service with her combat dog Rex was depicted in a 2017 film, was also acknowledged for her contributions.
