Democrat Sen Murphy says Trump ‘seizures of power’ raise ‘constitutional crisis’

In a recent interview with National Public Radio, Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., raised concerns over what he sees as “illegal seizures of power” by President Donald Trump and Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) leader Elon Musk. Murphy condemned the White House Office of Management and Budget’s efforts to freeze funding approved by Congress and the Trump administration’s moves to review, restructure, and potentially abolish parts of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), leading to layoffs and the suspension of taxpayer-funded programs globally.

The senator called for Democrats to resist collaborating with Republicans on legislation or supporting nominees appointed by Trump until the crisis passes. He emphasized the need for the American public to stand up against what he perceives as an overreach of power by the administration. Murphy cited recent town halls and protests as signs of growing public discontent with the government’s actions.

Murphy urged his Republican colleagues to speak out against the administration’s actions and expressed concern over their silence on the matter. He argued that the president does not have the authority to unilaterally suspend federal programs or decide which entities receive funding, as it could lead to corruption and favoritism. The senator also accused Trump of violating court orders by refusing to restore funding and criticized the administration for essentially shutting down USAID and laying off employees.

Regarding Elon Musk’s involvement in the Department of Government Efficiency, Murphy dismissed claims of corruption and criminal activity within USAID as baseless and aimed at consolidating control over federal spending. He warned that allowing such actions to go unchallenged could undermine democracy in the country.

Murphy emphasized the importance of protecting democracy amidst the current constitutional crisis and stated his refusal to support any more nominees appointed by Trump. He also mentioned efforts to challenge the administration’s actions in court and called for public sentiment to pressure Republicans to join in opposing the seizures of power.

As the situation unfolds, Murphy remains committed to upholding the principles of democracy and ensuring that the government’s actions do not infringe upon the rights and freedoms of the American people. The senator’s stance reflects a growing concern over the balance of power and accountability within the federal government, highlighting the need for bipartisan support in safeguarding the country’s democratic institutions.
