Trump uniquely placed to ‘whisper’ in Erdogan’s ear over Turkish regional ambitions: Greek defense minister

Greece’s top defense official, Nikos Dendias, has raised concerns about expansionist rhetoric within NATO, particularly from Turkey. The longstanding feud between Greece and Turkey over Cyprus has strained relations between the two NATO members for over half a century. Dendias warned that some in Turkey have ambitions to recreate the Ottoman Empire, which includes parts of Greece, Syria, Iraq, Iran, and the Caucasus.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s aggressive approach in the region has drawn criticism from Greece and other NATO allies. Erdoğan’s pursuit of regional natural resources and controversial actions in the Middle East and Aegean Sea have raised concerns about his geopolitical ambitions. Dendias emphasized the importance of not forgetting allies, such as the Kurds, who fought against ISIS alongside Western forces.

The close relationship between President Donald Trump and Erdoğan has raised questions about how the Turkish leader will pursue his regional ambitions. Dendias expressed hope that Trump would remind Erdoğan of international laws and norms to prevent further destabilization in the region. Turkey’s recent military exercises in the Black, Mediterranean, and Aegean Seas have heightened tensions with Greece, with Ankara asserting territorial claims over Greek islands.

Greece’s defensive posture within NATO has forced Athens to prioritize defense spending, with the country ranking fifth in defense spending within the alliance. Dendias stressed the need for European nations to collectively address security threats and defense spending levels. He also highlighted the importance of upholding international law and treaties to prevent border disputes and conflicts.

While Dendias did not comment on Trump’s recent statements regarding military intervention in acquiring Greenland and the Panama Canal, the Turkish Ministry of National Defense emphasized Turkey’s commitment to international law and peace. The ministry stated that Turkey would protect its national rights and interests while seeking peaceful resolutions to disputes with Greece.
