Illegal alien killer of Las Vegas showgirl, Canadian tourist sentenced to life

An illegal immigrant from Guatemala has been sentenced to two consecutive life sentences for the brutal stabbing deaths of a Las Vegas showgirl and a Canadian tourist in 2022. Yoni Barrios, the perpetrator of this heinous crime, took the lives of Brent Allan Hallett, 47, and Maris Mareen DiGiovanni, 30, during a violent spree on the Las Vegas strip in October of that year. Additionally, he injured six other individuals in the attack.
Barrios was initially found incompetent to stand trial and spent nearly two years in a hospital before ultimately pleading guilty to the crimes in January. He was handed down his sentence on Tuesday. The horrific incident occurred when Barrios became enraged after a group of showgirls declined to take a photo with him. He proceeded to brandish a long-bladed kitchen knife, which he used to carry out the deadly assault. Barrios was apprehended outside the Wynn Hotel just minutes after the attack.
According to records, Barrios had previous encounters with law enforcement in California, including a 2016 incident where he was prosecuted for reckless driving and driving without a license. Despite this, he was not deported from the country. In 2019, Barrios faced charges of domestic violence but was never prosecuted for the offense.
It is noteworthy that California is considered a “sanctuary state” for undocumented immigrants, meaning that it typically does not cooperate with federal immigration authorities. In the case of Barrios, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was never notified about his immigration status in 2016.
The tragic events surrounding the Las Vegas stabbing spree underscore the importance of addressing issues related to immigration enforcement and cooperation between local and federal authorities. Barrios’ actions have left a lasting impact on the families of the victims and the broader community. It is imperative that steps are taken to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
The sentencing of Yoni Barrios serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilant law enforcement efforts and effective immigration policies to ensure the safety and security of all individuals within the United States. As we reflect on this devastating incident, may we honor the memories of Brent Allan Hallett and Maris Mareen DiGiovanni by advocating for justice and accountability in our society.
