US-flagged tanker collides with container ship near UK

A tragic incident occurred off the coast of eastern England on Monday when a cargo ship collided with a tanker carrying jet fuel, sparking a massive fire and prompting a major rescue operation. The collision involved the U.S.-flagged chemical and oil products tanker MV Stena Immaculate and the Portugal-flagged container ship Solong.

According to reports, the tanker sustained a ruptured cargo tank containing Jet-A1 fuel, resulting in a fire and multiple explosions onboard. Despite the severity of the situation, the operator of the tanker, Crowley Ship Management, confirmed that all crew members were safe and accounted for.

Emergency services sprang into action, with at least 32 individuals being brought ashore following the collision. The condition of these individuals remains unclear at this time. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency in Britain dispatched several lifeboats, a coast guard rescue helicopter, and a coast guard plane to the scene in the North Sea, near the port of Grimsby.

The Chief Executive of the Port of Grimsby East, Martyn Boyers, reported that casualties were brought in on a high-speed vessel and a harbor pilot boat. He described the scene as chaotic, with thick black smoke billowing from both vessels and reports of a massive fireball.

The RNLI lifeboat agency also joined the search and rescue efforts, with three lifeboats working alongside the coast guard to aid those affected by the collision. Video footage captured by the BBC showed the intensity of the situation, with thick smoke engulfing the ships.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander expressed her gratitude to the emergency service workers involved in responding to the incident, emphasizing the importance of their continued efforts. The exact cause of the collision is still under investigation, but authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals involved.
