US rugby star faces suspension after ‘thuggery’ red card for head stamp

American Olympic rugby star Alev Kelter is facing a judicial hearing and a potential lengthy suspension after being sent off in a women’s rugby test for stamping on the head of an opponent during a match against Australia. The incident occurred during the Pacific Four Series test, where Team USA was defeated by Australia with a score of 27-19.
Referees issued a red card to Kelter around the 79th minute of the game after reviewing video footage that showed her forcefully stamping on the head of Australian center Georgie Friedrichs. The seriousness of the offense was evident when a referee was heard saying, “Twelve, blue (Kelter), is going to receive a permanent red card because this is thuggery, it is deliberate and it is very dangerous foul play. She’s clearly stamped on the head of the Australian player. That’s reckless, that’s dangerous and she’s going off.”
Fortunately, Friedrichs did not sustain any major injuries from the incident, and Team USA coach Sione Fukofuka issued an apology to the Australian players for the unsportsmanlike behavior. Foul play in rugby that involves contact with the head is taken very seriously, as the sport has made significant rule changes to minimize the risk of head injuries and concussions.
A three-time US Olympic representative in rugby sevens, Kelter had previously won a bronze medal in the sport at the Paris Olympics. Prior to her rugby career, she also played ice hockey and soccer for the University of Wisconsin.
Judicial hearings for foul play in rugby typically take place within 48 hours of a match, where the severity of the offense and potential disciplinary actions are assessed. It remains to be seen what consequences Kelter will face following the incident.
In conclusion, the incident involving Alev Kelter in the women’s rugby test has sparked controversy and raised concerns about player safety in the sport. As the rugby community awaits the outcome of the judicial hearing, it serves as a reminder of the importance of fair play and respect on the field.
