Vancouver Canucks send J.T. Miller to New York Rangers in 5-player trade

The Vancouver Canucks have made a significant move by trading star centre J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers. The deal, which was announced late Friday, also involved the Canucks sending blueliner Erik Brannstrom and defensive prospect Jackson Dorrington to the Rangers.

In return, the Rangers sent centre Filip Chytil, defenceman Victor Mancini, and a conditional first-round draft pick in the 2025 NHL entry draft to Vancouver. This trade marks the end of Miller’s tumultuous time in Vancouver, as he was held out of the Canucks’ recent game against the Dallas Stars.

Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin expressed gratitude towards Miller for his contributions to the team, acknowledging his impact as a passionate player and leader. Allvin also expressed excitement about the additions of Chytil and Mancini to the Canucks’ roster.

The decision to trade Miller came after Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford confirmed a rift between Miller and fellow centre Elias Pettersson. Rutherford acknowledged that the situation had impacted the entire team, prompting the need for a change.

Following the trade with the Rangers, the Canucks acquired defenceman Marcus Pettersson and forward Drew O’Connor from the Pittsburgh Penguins. This move involved giving up forward Danton Heinen, defenceman Vincent Desharnais, the rights to forward Melvin Fernstrom, and the conditional pick acquired from the Rangers.

Miller’s time in Vancouver has been challenging, with the 31-year-old forward taking a leave of absence earlier in the season for personal reasons. Despite the difficulties, Miller has posted impressive numbers, with nine goals and 26 assists in 40 games during the 2024-25 campaign.

Having been a standout player for the Canucks, Miller’s departure marks the end of an era for Vancouver fans who regularly chanted his name at Rogers Arena. Miller’s career highs in goals and points last season showcased his talent and leadership on the ice.

As Miller embarks on a new chapter with the Rangers, the Canucks welcome Chytil and Mancini to their lineup. Chytil, a 25-year-old forward from Czechia, brings scoring prowess with 11 goals and nine assists in 41 games this season. Mancini, a 22-year-old blueliner, adds depth to the Canucks’ defensive core with his physical play.

Overall, the trades involving Miller, Chytil, and Mancini signal a new direction for both the Canucks and the Rangers. As the NHL season progresses, fans will be watching closely to see how these roster changes impact the teams’ performances on the ice.
