Wet, windy weather this weekend in Nova Scotia

The weather in Nova Scotia has been quite gloomy, damp, and windy for the past 10 days, and it looks like it’s going to continue this weekend. Unfortunately, the wet weather has been concentrated in northeastern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, with rainfall totals ranging from 30 to 60 millimetres since Remembrance Day. On the other hand, the southwestern part of the province has remained mostly dry.

The good news is that a new system is approaching, which is expected to bring more widespread rainfall on Friday and into Saturday, with some lingering showers on Sunday. Most of the province is likely to see between 20 to 40 millimetres of rain by Sunday evening, with the possibility of higher totals in the eastern regions. The bulk of the rain is expected to fall on Friday night and Saturday morning.

In addition to the rain, easterly winds are expected to pick up on Friday and intensify overnight into Saturday morning. Gusts ranging from 50 to 70 km/h are expected for the mainland, with even stronger gusts of 60 km/h to 90 km/h or higher for Cape Breton.

As the system moves out, chilly northwest winds are forecasted to move in on Sunday, with gusts of 40-60 km/h expected, and possibly stronger gusts in the southwest. The blocking high that has been causing the unsettled weather is breaking down, paving the way for a more variable weather pattern in the upcoming week. This means there will be more opportunities for sunshine, as well as much-needed rainfall.

Looking ahead, long-range forecast models suggest that the first week of December in Nova Scotia may be cooler than average, with the potential for some snow. While there is still some uncertainty, it seems likely that the month will start off crisp and cold. Stay tuned for further updates on this development.
