Fresno State basketball players bet on games they played in: report

Fresno State men’s basketball is currently facing a major scandal involving sports gambling. According to ABC 30 Action News, it has been revealed that two out of the three athletes involved allegedly placed bets on games they participated in. The Bulldogs took immediate action by removing forward Mykell Robinson from the team and suspending guards Jalen Weaver and Zaon Collins for their involvement in sports betting.

Reports from ABC 30 Action News indicate that Robinson and Weaver placed bets on their team falling short of their projected points and rebounds totals. This action is a direct violation of NCAA rules, which strictly prohibit student-athletes, coaches, and athletics staff members from engaging in any form of sports betting or providing insider information to individuals associated with such activities.

Fresno State head coach Vance Walberg was the first to discover the players’ alleged gambling activities and promptly reported it to the university. Following an internal investigation, the NCAA has also launched its own inquiry into the matter. ESPN reported that Weaver and Collins are currently being withheld from competition as the university reviews their eligibility status.

Weaver and Collins are key players for the Bulldogs this season, with Weaver averaging 12.5 points per game and Collins closely behind at 12.0 points per game while leading the team with 4.7 assists per game. On the other hand, Robinson has not been part of the team since January 11.

Fresno State Athletics has declined to comment further on the issue at this time. The team has been on a losing streak, with a record of 5-23 this season, marking the most losses in a single campaign.

With three players sidelined, the Bulldogs were left with only seven players in their recent game against Air Force, resulting in a 72-69 overtime loss. The team’s performance has undoubtedly been affected by the absence of key players due to the gambling scandal.

As the investigation unfolds, the future of Fresno State men’s basketball remains uncertain. It is crucial for the university and NCAA to address the issue promptly and take appropriate actions to uphold the integrity of college sports. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
