Venezuelan opposition member details being forced to shelter from Maduro’s regime

Pedro Urruchurtu, one of the Venezuelan opposition members who recently spent over 400 days seeking refuge in the Argentine Embassy in Caracas, shared his harrowing experiences with the United Nations Human Rights Council. He described the oppressive conditions they endured at the hands of Nicolás Maduro’s regime, including months without electricity, limited access to water, and constant threats from regime forces.
Urruchurtu revealed that they were targeted simply for their involvement in political campaigns for opposition candidates Maria Corina Machado and Edmundo González. Despite the hardships they faced, including being surrounded by armed forces and aggressive dogs, they persevered and ultimately won their respective campaigns.
After their release in May, Urruchurtu and his fellow opposition members were rescued in a successful U.S. operation orchestrated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. They were brought to the U.S., where they were able to meet with Rubio and receive commendation for their bravery in standing up to Maduro’s dictatorship.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, also addressed the council, highlighting the deteriorating human rights situation in Venezuela. He cited numerous cases of arbitrary detentions, violations of due process, enforced disappearances, and allegations of torture and ill-treatment. Türk emphasized the need for the international community to pay attention to the ongoing crisis in Venezuela and take action to hold the regime accountable.
Hillel Neuer, Executive Director of UN Watch, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of not turning a blind eye to the suffering of the Venezuelan people under Maduro’s rule. He praised the Trump administration and Rubio for their role in securing the release of Urruchurtu and his colleagues, emphasizing the power of strong diplomacy in advancing the cause of freedom and human rights.
As Venezuela continues to grapple with political turmoil and human rights abuses, Urruchurtu’s testimony serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and determination of those who fight for democracy and justice in the face of oppression. The international community must remain vigilant in holding the Maduro regime accountable and supporting the Venezuelan people in their quest for freedom and democracy.
