Work underway in Alberta town to restore one of last remaining Quonset-style theatres

The Roxy Theatre in Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, has a rich history that is in need of restoration. Built in 1948, this iconic theatre has been closed for 20 years, but there is hope for its revival. The building committee, led by former Alberta cabinet minister Fred Bradley, has been working tirelessly to restore the theatre to its original glory.

The theatre’s unique Quonset hut-style design sets it apart from other theatres in North America. With its galvanized corrugated steel panels and art deco ticket booth, the Roxy is a rare gem that must be preserved. The building committee has already begun the restoration process, with plans to transform the theatre into a state-of-the-art performing arts center by December 2027.

The restoration project comes with a hefty price tag of $4 million, but with the help of federal and provincial grants, along with fundraising efforts, the committee is confident in reaching their goal. The foundation and roof have already been repaired, and the interior is ready for restoration. The community is excited about the prospect of having a vibrant cultural hub in downtown Coleman once again.

The Roxy Theatre was recently recognized in the Canada’s Next Great Save contest, finishing fourth in the national competition. This recognition has brought even more attention to the restoration efforts and has generated excitement among locals and visitors alike. Crowsnest Pass Mayor Blair Painter, who fondly remembers going to movies at the Roxy as a child, is optimistic about the positive impact the restored theatre will have on the community.

As the project progresses, the committee remains committed to preserving the theatre’s unique history and architecture. The Roxy Theatre is not just a building, but a symbol of resilience and community spirit. With the support of the public and dedicated volunteers, the Roxy is on track to once again become a beloved cultural landmark in southwestern Alberta.
