Young Thug trial: Defendant stabbed

Indicted Man Stabbed in Jail, Expected in Court Monday

One of the two men indicted alongside rapper Young Thug, awaiting a jury verdict, was reportedly stabbed in jail but is expected to appear in court on Monday, according to his lawyer.

Attorney Doug Weinstein has confirmed that his client, Deamonte Kendrick, known as Yak Gotti in the music industry, sustained injuries on Sunday. The jury is set to reconvene on Monday to continue deliberations on the gang-related, murder, drug, and gun charges facing Kendrick and Shannon Stillwell.

Fulton County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman, Natalie Ammons, stated in an email that Kendrick and another detainee engaged in a physical altercation at the jail’s south annex in Union City. Kendrick received treatment for minor injuries caused by a sharp object, and an investigation into the incident is currently ongoing.

Kendrick and Stillwell were among the 28 individuals indicted alongside Young Thug in May 2022 for various charges, including conspiracy to violate Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. The trial, which began with jury selection almost two years ago, saw opening statements presented a year ago.

In October, four of the defendants, including Young Thug, pleaded guilty, with the rapper, whose real name is Jeffery Williams, being released on probation. However, Stillwell and Kendrick opted to reject plea deals following lengthy negotiations, with their legal teams choosing not to present additional evidence or witnesses.

After commencing deliberations last Tuesday afternoon, the jury adjourned at 5 p.m. They deliberated for approximately six hours on Wednesday before breaking for the Thanksgiving holiday. The jurors are scheduled to reconvene on Monday to continue their deliberations.
