US must protect AI tech from China theft while reaching trade agreement: Rounds

The battle to maintain America’s status as the world’s economic and military leader is becoming increasingly challenging as China continues to steal intellectual property from American institutions and industry. Republican South Dakota Sen. Mike Rounds believes that the key to thwarting China’s theft of technology is to maintain them as a key trade partner while restricting their access to American technology, such as artificial intelligence and computer chips.

During an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, Rounds emphasized the importance of protecting America’s intellectual property from Chinese theft. He highlighted how China has advanced into a “near-peer competitor” with the U.S. from a military standpoint and the need to address their relentless stealing of U.S. intellectual property.

Rounds expressed concerns about Chinese students with ties to the Chinese Communist Party who are trained at U.S. schools and then return to China or feed information to China. He advocated for a pause on admitting such students into elite U.S. schools until enforceable agreements are in place to protect intellectual property from being compromised.

In addition, Rounds discussed the importance of embracing technological advancements like artificial intelligence in order to stay ahead of China. He mentioned the potential benefits of AI in healthcare, such as quickly identifying cancer or diagnosing diseases like diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Rounds believes that once Americans see the tangible benefits of AI in improving their quality of life, there will be a greater acceptance and adoption of the technology across various sectors.

Despite the ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and China, Rounds acknowledged the need for a favorable trade deal while also addressing China’s theft of intellectual property. He emphasized the importance of striking a balance between economic activity and protecting American interests from Chinese theft.
