‘Red Sox fan’ misidentified as ‘Phillies Karen,’ cleans up rumor on Facebook

The Controversy Over the Phillies Fan Who Demanded a Home Run Ball

The drama surrounding a Philadelphia Phillies fan who demanded a father give her a home run ball during a game against the Miami Marlins has captivated fans and sparked online rumors.

After the woman approached the father who had caught the ball and gave it to his young son, fans took to the internet in an attempt to identify her. Speculation pointed to a woman named Cheryl Richardson-Wagner, but she quickly shut down the rumors with a humorous Facebook post.

In response to the online hate, Richardson-Wagner wrote, “OK everyone … I’m not the crazy Philly Mom (but I sure would love to be as thin as she is and move as fast) …. And I’m a Red Sox fan.”

The controversy even spread to a New Jersey school district, with the Hammonton School District issuing a statement to clarify that no one from their schools was involved in the incident.

The father, identified as Drew Felwell, eventually gave the ball to the woman despite the backlash. In an interview with NBC Philadelphia, Felwell explained his decision to deescalate the situation and set an example for his son.
