Border state governor vows to defy Trump’s ‘misguided’ mass deportation push
Arizona’s Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs has made it clear that her state will not be assisting the incoming administration with its proposed mass deportation operation. Despite Arizona voting for President-elect Donald Trump in the recent election, Hobbs emphasized the importance of current partnerships with the federal government to secure the border.
In an interview with ABC News, Hobbs expressed hope that the partnership with the federal government would continue and that the incoming administration would listen to experts on the ground to determine the most effective strategies for border security. She stated, “What I will unequivocally say is that, as governor, I will not tolerate efforts that are part of misguided policies that harm our communities, that threaten our communities, that terrorize our communities, and Arizona will not take part in those.”
President-elect Trump has made mass deportation a central theme of his upcoming presidency, with plans already in motion to launch the operation. Despite pressure to involve state police and the National Guard in the deportations, Hobbs firmly stated that Arizona would not participate in any efforts that harm communities. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey have also pledged to protect residents and resist the deportation efforts. Former “border czar” Tom Homan, appointed by President-elect Trump, has warned officials who refuse to cooperate to “get out of the way.” He emphasized that the deportation operation will proceed regardless of their opposition.
