Heavy snowfall expected through weekend across Alberta
A snowy weekend is in store for much of Alberta, following a mild fall that lasted up until this week. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, eastern Alberta could see up to 35 centimeters of snow by Saturday night, with other areas expecting snowfall totals ranging from 15 to 25 cm. Southern Alberta is also expected to receive significant snowfall, with some areas accumulating 5 to 10 cm by Saturday morning.
The snow is predicted to spread northward on Friday night, with the heaviest snowfall expected on Saturday, adding another 10 to 25 cm in some areas. While snow is expected to taper off on Saturday evening for most regions, east-central parts of the province may continue to experience moderate snow until early Sunday morning. Environment Canada is warning of reduced visibility during heavy snowfall this weekend, making surfaces like roads, walkways, and parking lots difficult to navigate.
In response to the weather conditions, Calgary Transit has announced the activation of snow detours starting on Friday at 8 p.m., which are expected to remain in place until Monday morning. Meteorologist Stephen Berg from Environment and Climate Change Canada explained that the snowfall, following a mild fall in Alberta, signals the onset of cooler and potentially snowier weather in the coming weeks. Berg attributed the weekend’s snowfall to remnants of the bomb cyclone that hit British Columbia and has since moved eastward.
Snowfall warnings are in effect for much of southern and central Alberta, extending as far north as Grande Prairie. Similar warnings have been issued for the west coast of British Columbia and southern Saskatchewan, reaching as far east as Moose Jaw. Berg advised drivers to exercise caution due to reduced visibility on Friday and Saturday, with heavy bursts of snow expected on Friday and a more substantial snowfall on Saturday.
As the weekend approaches, residents of Alberta are urged to prepare for the snowy conditions and take necessary precautions while traveling. Stay updated on weather alerts and road conditions to ensure a safe and smooth commute during the snowy weekend ahead.
