US Election 2024

Progressive House Dems unanimously elect police defunding proponent

Texas Democratic Rep. Greg Casar, the newly elected chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, has a controversial history as a City Council member in Austin. Casar made headlines for leading the charge to strip funding from local law enforcement, resulting in a more than $100 million cut in police funding and the cancellation of three incoming cadet classes. In 2020, after a series of police shootings involving people of color, Casar drafted legislation that passed unanimously in the Austin City Council.

Casar’s actions as a City Council member were not received well by all, with some critics describing him as a “far-left radical.” Dennis Farris, president of the Austin Police Retired Officers Association, criticized Casar for his extreme policies that led to retirements and hiring issues within the police department.

Despite the backlash, Casar was recently elevated to the highest-ranking leadership position for progressives in the House of Representatives. His appointment comes at a time when Democrats are reevaluating their strategies following the recent election results. Many within the party have called for a more centrist approach moving forward.

During his time as a City Council member, Casar also authored two “Freedom City” resolutions aimed at reforming law enforcement practices. These resolutions eliminated discretionary arrests for certain non-violent crimes and required police to inform individuals of their right to deny requests for immigration papers. Casar also supported a ban on non-lethal police munitions and certain chokeholds.

As a member of Congress, Casar has continued to advocate for police reform. Last year, he called on the Department of Justice to investigate the Austin Police Department’s use of force policies and practices. Despite criticism from some Democrats and Republicans alike, Casar remains committed to his progressive ideals.

In a recent press conference, Casar emphasized the need for the Democratic Party to prioritize winning elections over ideological purity. He called for a party that is more in touch with everyday people and less disconnected from reality. While Casar acknowledges the need for a shift within the party, he remains unapologetic in his progressive stance.

Overall, Rep. Greg Casar’s rise to leadership within the Congressional Progressive Caucus reflects the ongoing debate within the Democratic Party over its future direction. As the party grapples with how to appeal to a broad range of voters, Casar’s leadership will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping the party’s agenda moving forward.
