WH backs Israel’s decision to halt Gaza aid shipments

The White House has expressed its support for the Israeli government’s decision to block aid to Gaza until Hamas leaders agree to extend the ceasefire, as per a statement released on Sunday. National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes stated that Israel has been negotiating in good faith to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas terrorists. The White House will back Israel’s next steps, as Hamas has indicated it is no longer interested in a negotiated ceasefire.

Israeli officials have announced a halt on the entry of all goods and supplies into Gaza, warning Hamas of additional consequences if they do not accept a new proposal for an extended ceasefire. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stated that the decision was made following Hamas’ refusal to accept the framework proposed by U.S. Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff, to which Israel had agreed.

Hamas has accused Israel of attempting to derail the ceasefire, labeling the decision to cut off aid as “cheap extortion” and a “war crime.” They criticized Israel for failing to uphold its commitments and evading obligations under the ceasefire agreement. Hamas called the move an act of blackmail targeting an entire population by depriving them of essential resources.

The first phase of the ceasefire, which included an increase in humanitarian assistance, expired on Saturday. The second phase involves Hamas releasing remaining hostages in exchange for an Israeli pullout and a permanent ceasefire. The decision to suspend aid was made in coordination with the Trump administration, according to Israeli officials.

A proposal to extend the ceasefire through Ramadan and Passover was supported by Israeli officials, with the condition that Hamas releases half the hostages on the first day and the remainder upon reaching an agreement on a permanent ceasefire. The first phase of the ceasefire saw the release of 25 Israeli hostages and the remains of eight others, in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinians imprisoned by Israel.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas began when Hamas launched a surprise attack in 2023, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the abduction of over 251. Israel’s offensive in response to Hamas’ attack has led to the deaths of more than 48,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The situation remains tense as both sides navigate the delicate negotiations for a lasting ceasefire.

The White House’s support for Israel’s decision underscores the complex dynamics at play in the region, as efforts continue to secure peace and stability for both Israelis and Palestinians.
