US Election 2024

Congressional Democrats targeting 35 House Republican-held seats in 2026 midterms

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has set its sights on nearly three dozen Republican-held seats in the House of Representatives as they gear up to regain the majority in the upcoming midterm elections in 2026. The DCCC recently unveiled its initial target list of 35 GOP-controlled districts and has launched a fundraising effort to support the Democratic nominees in each of these key battlegrounds.

According to DCCC Chair Rep. Suzan DelBene, House Republicans are facing a tough battle as they struggle to maintain their majority. DelBene criticized the GOP for their handling of the economy, healthcare, and national security issues, accusing them of losing the trust of their constituents. She emphasized that Democrats are ready to take the offensive and win back the majority in 2026.

The DCCC’s target list reflects a growing dissatisfaction with House Republicans, with eroding public support becoming more apparent. The recent elections in Wisconsin and Florida have shown that Democratic voters are energized and motivated to resist President Donald Trump’s policies. The DCCC believes that these elections are a preview of what to expect in the upcoming midterms.

The districts targeted by the DCCC are currently held by Republican incumbents in states such as Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin. The DCCC has also set up nominee fund pages to support Democratic candidates in these competitive races.

On the other hand, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) remains confident in their ability to defend their majority in the House. NRCC Chair Rep. Richard Hudson pointed out that there are more Democrats in districts won by former President Donald Trump than there are Republicans in districts won by Vice President Kamala Harris. Hudson believes that the trend of Democratic incumbents seeking statewide offices instead of seeking re-election will work in favor of the GOP.

As the 2026 midterm elections draw closer, both parties are gearing up for a fierce battle for control of the House of Representatives. With the DCCC targeting key Republican-held districts and the NRCC confident in their ability to defend their majority, the upcoming elections are sure to be highly competitive and closely watched.
