US Election 2024

Trump hauls in millions for House GOP 2026 war chest as Dems taunt they are ‘running scared’

President Donald Trump is gearing up to support congressional Republicans in their battle to maintain their House majority in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. Trump is set to headline a major donor event for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) in Washington, D.C., with expectations to raise at least $10 million for the campaign arm.

Currently, Republicans hold a fragile 220-215 majority in the House, making fundraising crucial to their strategy to retain control. NRCC chair Rep. Richard Hudson expressed concerns about the Democrats’ fundraising advantage, emphasizing the need for Republicans to match their financial efforts to ensure their candidates can effectively communicate their message.

Hudson highlighted the significance of maintaining the House majority for Trump to have a longer runway to enact his agenda. He pointed out that House Democratic leader Speaker Hakeem Jeffries would pose significant challenges to Trump’s agenda if Democrats were to regain control.

In a strategic move, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) unveiled a target list of 35 GOP-controlled seats they aim to flip in the 2026 elections. This aggressive approach signals the Democrats’ intent to win back the majority and underscores the fierce competition expected in the upcoming midterms.

Despite historical trends favoring the party out of power in midterm elections, the NRCC remains optimistic about defending their majority. Hudson highlighted the advantage of having fewer vulnerable Republicans in districts won by former Vice President Kamala Harris compared to Democrats in districts carried by Trump, particularly in majority Hispanic districts.

The NRCC also noted the growing number of House Democrats seeking statewide office in 2026, potentially opening up more competitive seats for Republicans to target. Hudson expressed confidence that this trend would work in favor of the GOP in defending their majority.

Overall, the 2026 midterm elections are shaping up to be a highly contested battle for control of the House. With fundraising efforts ramping up and strategic targeting of key districts, both Republicans and Democrats are preparing for a fierce political showdown that will have lasting implications for the future of Congress.
