AI Technology Helps U.S. Fire Departments Detect Wildfires Faster

Aspen, Colorado is facing a new challenge as wildfire risk has shifted from being a seasonal concern to a year-round threat. To combat this growing issue, the fire department in Aspen has turned to artificial intelligence for assistance. The use of AI-powered cameras has revolutionized the way wildfires are detected and responded to in the area.
Arvind Satyam, the co-founder and chief commercial officer of Pano AI, explains that the cameras provide a full 360-degree view of the landscape. High in the mountains, these rotating cameras scan the terrain for smoke, allowing for early detection of potential fires. The system is so advanced that it can detect smoke before 911 calls even come in, giving firefighters a head start in their response efforts.
Once the AI system detects a potential fire, the alert is reviewed by a human team. Verified alerts are then sent to the Aspen Fire Department via text or email, along with the exact location of the fire. This precise location data is crucial in ensuring that fire crews can reach the scene within five minutes, a goal that would be nearly impossible without the use of AI technology.
In addition to detecting smoke, the AI cameras can provide satellite views of the terrain and overlay weather information such as wind speed and relative humidity. This comprehensive data allows fire officials to make informed decisions and effectively coordinate response efforts.
One recent example of the AI system in action was during Aspen’s Sunnyside Prescribed Fire. The 900-acre fire was monitored using Pano AI cameras, preventing it from spreading beyond the designated area. The success of this operation highlights the effectiveness of AI technology in wildfire prevention and management.
The use of AI-powered cameras is not limited to Aspen, as the technology is now being utilized across 10 states in the U.S. Multiple fire agencies can share alerts and coordinate response efforts, ensuring a more efficient and effective response to wildfires.
