Arkansas public school students to soon receive mandatory gun safety courses
The Arkansas state Senate recently passed a bill known as Act 229, or House Bill 1117, which mandates age-appropriate firearms safety instruction for students. The Arkansas Department of Education will collaborate with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission to develop a comprehensive plan for implementing this new requirement in public school districts and open-enrollment public charter schools.
The inspiration for this bill stemmed from discussions among neighbors, reflecting concerns about children encountering unsecured firearms while playing in different homes. Representative Scott Richardson emphasized the importance of ensuring that children are equipped with the knowledge and skills to handle such situations safely.
Under the new legislation, the Arkansas State Game and Fish Commission will collaborate with the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education to create and approve firearm safety courses tailored to different age groups. Various instructional methods are being considered, ranging from videos to online resources. Additionally, there may be an option for off-campus firearm safety courses that include live-fire exercises or sporting events, although parental consent will be required for participation in such activities.
The bill also outlines the establishment of a committee responsible for determining the appropriate grade level for students to begin receiving firearm safety training. Starting from the 2025-2026 school year, students in Arkansas will receive this crucial instruction as part of their educational curriculum.
