Canadians ‘frustrated’ with Trump’s tariffs, talk of annexation, ambassador says

Canadians are expressing feelings of frustration towards the United States over President Donald Trump’s recent comments about annexing the country and imposing tariffs on Canadian goods, according to Canadian Ambassador to the U.S. Kirsten Hillman. During an appearance on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Hillman highlighted the discontent that Canadians are experiencing towards their neighbor, stating that citizens “don’t really appreciate it.”

“They’re getting a little bit frustrated with that kind of rhetoric,” Hillman remarked, referring to Trump’s talk of making Canada the 51st state. “But more importantly, Canadians are frustrated with our neighbors.”

Hillman emphasized that Canadians feel as though they are under economic attack due to Trump’s tariffs, which has caused challenges across Canadian society. The U.S. recently implemented a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico, as well as an additional 10% levy on Chinese imports in an effort to combat drug trafficking and illegal immigration.

In response to the escalating tensions, Trump temporarily suspended the 25% tariffs on most goods from Canada and Mexico covered under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) for a month. This back-and-forth approach to tariffs comes at a crucial time as Canada prepares to elect a new leader who will succeed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has had a strained relationship with Trump in recent years.

Hillman expressed optimism that Canada’s new leader will prioritize fostering a positive and productive relationship with Trump. She acknowledged that building strong relationships requires effort from both parties, but she assured that Canada is committed to making it a priority.

As the situation continues to unfold, it is evident that tensions between Canada and the U.S. remain high. It is crucial for both countries to find common ground and work towards resolving their differences to ensure a harmonious relationship in the future.
