Federal government announces 2 Nova Scotia properties for housing developments
The federal government has recently added two properties in Nova Scotia to the Canada Public Land Bank as part of its national housing plan. These properties, the New Glasgow Armoury and Shannon Park in Dartmouth, will be transformed into housing through long-term leases, with a focus on supporting affordable housing and keeping public land in public hands.
Shannon Park in Dartmouth is set to undergo a major redevelopment, with plans for a neighborhood featuring 3,000 residential units, 600 of which will be designated as affordable housing. The New Glasgow Armoury, which closed in 2016 due to its condition, is also being considered for redevelopment. Lisa MacDonald, New Glasgow’s chief administrative officer, sees great potential in the property due to its prime downtown location. She envisions a mixed-use development that includes commercial spaces on the main floor and housing on the upper floors.
Both properties are part of the government’s efforts to address the housing shortage in Nova Scotia. MacDonald acknowledges the challenges faced by the town in providing diverse housing options, including low-income, affordable, and high-end housing. With a focus on improving rental housing conditions, the town is working towards ensuring suitable living conditions for all residents.
New Glasgow Mayor Nancy Dicks emphasizes the importance of addressing the housing shortage in the area. While some buildings may hold historical significance and value in restoration, others like the New Glasgow Armoury may not have the same importance. Dicks acknowledges that tearing down the building could be a viable option to make room for new housing developments.
The addition of these properties to the Canada Public Land Bank is a significant step towards addressing housing needs in Nova Scotia. By repurposing underutilized spaces and focusing on affordable housing initiatives, the government is working towards creating inclusive and sustainable communities for all residents.
