Federal government names new chief adviser to fight human trafficking

New Chief Adviser Appointed by Federal Government to Combat Human Trafficking

The federal government has taken a significant step in addressing the issue of human trafficking by appointing Jennifer Richardson as the new chief adviser on the matter. Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Gary Anandasangaree made the announcement, emphasizing Richardson’s extensive experience as a longtime advocate for victims’ rights. With a three-year mandate, Richardson’s leadership is expected to play a crucial role in shaping Canada’s approach to combating human trafficking.

Richardson, a survivor of human trafficking herself, previously served as the director of Ontario’s Anti-Human Trafficking Coordination Office. She highlighted the need for a collaborative effort in addressing this complex issue, stressing the importance of partnerships, dialogue, and action. Richardson’s role as chief adviser will involve providing recommendations to Public Safety Minister David McGuinty and working closely with Anandasangaree to address the recommendations from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

Her appointment is part of a national strategy launched in 2019 to combat human trafficking, with an annual budget of $10.3 million allocated for funding various initiatives, including a confidential hotline for victims and survivors to access support services.

Despite recent tensions with the U.S. administration over border security issues, Anandasangaree clarified that Richardson’s appointment is not linked to those concerns. He emphasized the global nature of human trafficking and its impact on vulnerable populations, particularly Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals.

While human trafficking is primarily a domestic issue in Canada, Richardson stressed the importance of maintaining strong cooperation with the U.S. to effectively combat this crime. Her expertise and advocacy are expected to contribute significantly to the ongoing efforts to address human trafficking and support victims and survivors.
