Food is medicine: IWK receives hundreds of suggestions on how to change menu

The IWK Health Centre in Halifax has been inundated with feedback as it embarks on a revamp of its menu for the Dial for Dining food services. This initiative allows patients and their families to order food off a menu at any time, similar to room service at a hotel. The hospital launched a survey in March to gather input from current and former IWK families, and the response was overwhelming, with over 900 surveys completed before the deadline on Friday night.
Andrea Penney, the manager of food services at the IWK, expressed her surprise at the level of engagement from the community. She emphasized the importance of nourishment in the patient journey and the significant impact it can have on individuals during their hospital stay. With the introduction of a new computer system scheduled for August, Penney saw this as an opportune time to update the menu to better meet the needs and preferences of patients.
The feedback received from the survey highlighted several key areas for improvement, including the addition of more gluten-free options, a focus on local ingredients, and an increase in vegan, vegetarian, and culturally diverse menu items. While the official survey has ended, Penney encourages ongoing feedback through the patient feedback line to ensure all voices are heard.
One notable change that will be implemented is the presentation of food on serving trays, taking into consideration specific dietary preferences and requirements, such as patients with autism who prefer their foods not to touch. Additionally, to address concerns about the efficiency of the ordering process, the IWK is developing a patient app that will allow for direct food orders, with plans for a fall launch.
Although the changes to the food system will take time to implement, Penney shared that the department will begin testing new recipes this summer and aims to introduce some of the new meals in the fall. Despite the updates, Penney reassured patients that two beloved menu items – the quesadillas and the local blueberry crisp – will remain on the menu.
Overall, the IWK Health Centre is committed to enhancing the dining experience for patients and their families, taking into account their diverse dietary needs and preferences. By incorporating feedback from the community and leveraging technology to streamline the ordering process, the hospital aims to provide a more personalized and efficient food service that supports the well-being of all individuals in their care.
