Gallego floats alternative to U.S. $1,000 illegal alien self-deportation offer

The Department of Homeland Security is currently offering $1,000 to illegal aliens who choose to self-deport through the CBP Home App. However, Senator Ruben Gallego, a Democrat from Arizona, has proposed an alternative solution. Instead of simply offering money for self-deportation, Gallego suggests imposing a $5,000 fine, conducting background checks, and granting work visas to those individuals.
In a recent post on X, Gallego questioned, “Why don’t we make them pay a $5k fine, go through a background check and give them a work visa for a few years, renewable with good behavior.” He also mentioned that immigrants could cover the cost of their background checks.
Gallego emphasizes the idea of making illegal aliens pay for their actions, similar to the process for other immigrants. This proposal comes at a time when the Trump administration is intensifying efforts to combat illegal immigration and initiate mass deportation.
The $1,000 offer for self-deportation via the CBP Home App is part of the government’s strategy to reduce the costs associated with deportation. According to a DHS release, utilizing the app is expected to decrease deportation costs by approximately 70%. Currently, the average cost of arresting, detaining, and removing an illegal alien is $17,121.
In addition to the monetary incentive, illegal aliens who choose to self-deport will also receive travel assistance to return to their home country. DHS reports that the travel assistance program has already been successful, with one individual utilizing it to fly from Chicago to Honduras.
As the debate continues on how to handle illegal immigration, Senator Ruben Gallego’s proposal provides an alternative approach to incentivize self-deportation. By imposing fines, conducting background checks, and granting work visas, this plan aims to address the issue of illegal immigration in a more comprehensive manner.
