Halifax Pride announces the parade will go ahead after weeks of uncertainty
After weeks of uncertainty, Halifax Pride has announced that the parade will continue next Sunday at 2 p.m. as originally planned.
The news came just over a week before the parade was due to begin. Those interested are requested to visit the organization’s website for a link to the route of the parade, which will be slightly different from previous years.
Kevin Kindred, a member of Halifax Pride who regularly attends the organization’s meetings, previously spoke to CBC News about his concerns about this year’s festivities.
He said on Sunday that he hopes Halifax Pride “gets it done” this year, but the lack of communication has led many organizations to make other plans.
“Many organizations had to pull out because of the lack of certainty,” he said. “This announcement cannot undo the damage of months of lack of transparency.”
It’s free to join the parade for LGBTQ community groups and LGBTQ nonprofits. Other community organizations, charities, and businesses pay fees of $300 to $3,750 to participate.
There has been a volunteer sign-up page on the Halifax Pride website for months, but it’s unclear whether individuals have been contacted in response to their sign-ups.
There are no listed events for 2023 on the Halifax Pride website yet.
In lieu of any official notice, a list of Pride events in July has been compiled on Halifax’s Rainbow Encyclopediaan unaffiliated website operated by members of the local LGBTQ community.
CBC News has asked Halifax Pride for additional information and is awaiting a response.
The organization has declined to comment on any of our past inquiries about the status of this year’s parade and festival, including earlier this month.
