Victoire goaltender Ann-Renee Desbiens on long-term injured reserve

Ann-Renee Desbiens’ status for the upcoming women’s world hockey championship remains uncertain as the Montréal Victoire have placed the goaltender on long-term injured reserve. Despite sustaining a lower-body injury on March 18 against the Boston Fleet, Canada’s No. 1 netminder was named to the national team roster on March 21.

The 30-year-old goaltender from Clermont, Que., has been placed on LTIR retroactively, which means she will be out for a minimum of 21 days from March 18. In response to Desbiens’ injury, the Professional Women’s Hockey League team signed goaltender Tricia Deguire to a standard player agreement.

Desbiens was seen skating in full gear for about half an hour on Monday before the Victoire’s practice at Verdun Auditorium. General manager Daniele Sauvageau provided an update on Desbiens’ progress, stating that she is being evaluated on a daily and weekly basis. Sauvageau also mentioned that there is still time to determine Desbiens’ availability before Canada’s first game on April 10 against Finland in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic.

In addition to Desbiens’ injury, Canada is also without regular netminder Emerance Maschmeyer, who was placed on long-term injury reserve by the Ottawa Charge after sustaining a lower-body injury on March 11. As a result, Toronto Sceptres goalie Kristen Campbell and 21-year-old Eve Gascon were named as the other goalies on Canada’s roster.

The uncertainty surrounding Desbiens’ status adds a layer of complexity to Canada’s preparation for the world championship. The team will have to rely on Campbell and Gascon to step up in the absence of Desbiens and Maschmeyer. Fans will be eagerly awaiting updates on Desbiens’ condition as the tournament approaches.
