House committee calls sanctuary governors Walz, Pritzker, Hochul to testify

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Kentucky, is taking bold steps in his ongoing investigation into sanctuary jurisdictions and their impact on public safety. Comer recently sent letters requesting testimony from \”sanctuary governors\” to shed light on the controversial sanctuary laws designed to protect illegal immigrants. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul have been called to testify at a hearing on May 15 before the committee.

Comer emphasized the importance of understanding how sanctuary jurisdictions hinder the ability of federal law enforcement officers to make safe arrests and remove dangerous criminals from American communities. \”Sanctuary jurisdictions and their obstructionist policies threaten Americans’ safety,\” Comer told Fox News Digital.

In addition to calling the Democratic governors before Congress, the committee is requesting all documents and communications related to the sanctuary status of Illinois, Minnesota, and New York. This includes any correspondence between state officials and federal government officials regarding sanctuary policies.

President Donald Trump has also weighed in on the issue, expressing his determination to eliminate sanctuary cities. Trump posted on Truth Social, stating, \”No more Sanctuary Cities! They protect the Criminals, not the Victims. They are disgracing our Country, and are being mocked all over the World. Working on papers to withhold all Federal Funding for any City or State that allows these Death Traps to exist!!!\”

The committee’s efforts build on previous testimonies from Democratic mayors of cities with sanctuary policies. In a hearing earlier this year, mayors faced tough questions about whether sanctuary status hinders immigration enforcement. The Congressional Budget Office reports a significant influx of immigrants under the Biden Administration, raising concerns about the impact of sanctuary laws on law enforcement efforts.

Comer stressed the need for federal immigration laws to be enforced and criminal aliens to be swiftly removed from communities. He highlighted the Trump Administration’s efforts to ensure unimpeded immigration enforcement and suggested that Congress may need to consider further legislation to enhance border security and public safety.

Recent reports from the Department of Homeland Security indicate a significant number of arrests and deportations of illegal migrants. As the investigation into sanctuary jurisdictions continues, Comer and the committee are committed to ensuring the safety and security of American communities.
