Karine Jean-Pierre reveals mom’s cancer diagnosis — and why she kept it secret

However, just a few months later, Jean-Pierre received devastating news – her mother had been diagnosed with stage II colon cancer.
The former press secretary found out about her mother’s illness while she was on a trip to Poland with President Biden. Despite her mother’s wishes to keep her diagnosis private, Jean-Pierre confided in then-President Biden, who provided much-needed support during this difficult time. As she juggled her responsibilities at the White House with driving to New York every weekend to be by her mother’s side, Jean-Pierre faced the emotional and physical toll of balancing two demanding roles.

As the first Black, person of color, openly queer, and Haitian American immigrant press secretary, she felt a responsibility to represent and uplift underrepresented communities.
