Lightning strike sets off Sanford’s July 4th fireworks display prematurely

According to Bianca Gillett, Sanford’s Strategic Communications Manager, a large storm moved over central Florida on Friday afternoon, causing a lightning strike in the marina area where the fireworks were stored. This unexpected event led to a chain reaction that ignited the fireworks and destroyed the equipment used for launching the display.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or loss of life as a result of the incident. Gillett expressed gratitude for the safety of the community and encouraged people to still come out and enjoy the festivities, while reminding them not to bring their own fireworks.

A video posted by the St. Johns Rivership Company showed the fireworks going off during the daytime, against a backdrop of dreary skies. The company highlighted the months of planning and hard work that went into organizing the event, expressing disappointment that it was cut short by uncontrollable circumstances.
