Speaker Johnson says Trump’s megabill will be ‘jet fuel’ for the economy

House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, expressed confidence in President Donald Trump’s recent megabill, describing it as “jet fuel” for the economy despite criticisms from Democrats. Johnson handed Trump the gavel after the president signed the signature tax cuts and spending package into law on Friday, marking it as a significant step towards advancing the American First agenda.

During an appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” Johnson outlined a three-tier strategy, with the recent bill being the first step towards economic growth. He hinted at two future bills to be passed within the next year, with a second reconciliation bill expected by fall and a third by spring before the end of the current Congress. Johnson emphasized that these bills are aimed at delivering on the promises of the American First agenda that voters elected Republicans to fulfill.

In response to a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) memo predicting Republican losses in 2026 due to the megabill, Johnson pushed back, stating that the bill will result in increased take-home pay, more jobs, and better economic opportunities for Americans. He dismissed criticisms from Democrats like Rep. Ro Khanna and DNC Chair Ken Martin as “old, tired talking points” typically used against Republican tax legislation.

Johnson highlighted the permanent extension of the 2017 Trump tax cuts in the bill, which he claims targeted lower- and middle-income Americans. He noted that the megabill expands on these tax cuts by including benefits for various groups such as tips, overtime pay, and seniors, which will ultimately help Republicans during the 2026 midterm elections.

The speaker cited a report from the Council of Joint Economic Advisers, which projects that the megabill will spur 3% economic growth, create 4 million jobs, and increase the average household’s take-home pay by $13,000. Johnson emphasized that the bill will provide tax cuts for everyone, including small business owners, entrepreneurs, manufacturers, farmers, and other job providers, ultimately boosting the economy.

Addressing criticisms from Rep. Glenn Ivey, who argued that the megabill favors tax cuts for the wealthy over working-class Americans, Johnson refuted these claims, stating that the bill provides significant tax relief for individuals earning between $30,000 and $80,000 annually. He highlighted the bill’s focus on pro-growth policies and emphasized that it constitutes the largest savings for taxpayers in U.S. history.

In addition to tax cuts, Johnson mentioned that the bill includes provisions to secure the border permanently, promote American energy dominance, and make investments in the military industrial complex to strengthen national security and compete with countries like China.

Overall, Johnson expressed optimism about the economic impact of the megabill, stating that it will benefit hardworking Americans and contribute to a strong economic outlook leading up to the 2026 elections. The bill’s focus on tax cuts, economic growth, and national security aligns with the priorities of the American First agenda, as outlined by President Donald Trump.
