US Election 2024

Two new Republican senators are sworn in, replacing Rubio and Vance

Senators Ashley Moody of Florida and Jon Husted of Ohio were officially sworn in on Tuesday, filling the vacancies left by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance. With their addition, the Republican Senate conference now boasts 53 members.

Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida selected Ashley Moody, the former state attorney general, to take over Rubio’s seat. Shortly after, Governor Mike DeWine of Ohio announced his choice of Jon Husted, his former Lieutenant Governor, to replace Vance. This brings the total number of Republican senators to 53, while the Democratic caucus holds 47 seats.

Despite the GOP’s majority, they will still need to garner support from some Democrats to overcome the 60-vote threshold required to consider most legislation due to the legislative filibuster. However, on nominations and budget reconciliation, the threshold is lowered to just 51 votes.

Ashley Moody, upon accepting her appointment, expressed her dedication to serving as a United States senator with the same persistence and passion she brought to her role as Florida’s attorney general. She emphasized that she views her position not as a job, but as a calling.

Likewise, Jon Husted thanked Governor DeWine for the opportunity to serve the people of Ohio in the U.S. Senate. He expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him, starting from their partnership as running mates, to his role as lieutenant governor, and now as a senator.

As the new senators settle into their roles, they will play a crucial part in shaping the legislative agenda. With the Senate evenly divided, their votes will be pivotal in advancing or halting key legislation.
