N.S. school lunch program announces changes, including adding meals chosen by kids

The Nova Scotia government recently announced significant changes to its school lunch program in order to enhance the overall service provided to students. The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development revealed in a news release that they have taken into consideration feedback from parents and children regarding the quality and taste of the meals, leading to the implementation of new menu options, sustainable packaging, an improved ordering process, and enhanced delivery and service standards.

Initially launched last fall in 250 elementary schools throughout Nova Scotia, the program will now be expanded to include middle and junior high schools in the province starting this fall. This expansion means that over 104,000 students will now be eligible to participate in the program.

One of the key aspects of the program is its accessibility, as there are no set expectations for families to pay for meals. However, parents who choose to contribute financially can do so at the full price of $6.50 per meal or any amount they feel comfortable with.

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development has promised to provide more detailed information before the start of the next school year, ensuring that families are well informed about the changes and improvements being made to the school lunch program.

Overall, these changes aim to address the concerns raised by parents and students, while also promoting healthier eating habits and sustainable practices within schools across Nova Scotia. By listening to feedback and implementing necessary adjustments, the government is taking proactive steps to enhance the overall school lunch experience for students in the province.
