North Carolina duo nabbed with enough fentanyl to ‘potentially kill 13K people’
Two individuals were taken into custody last week in North Carolina after authorities uncovered a significant amount of fentanyl that was deemed potent enough to potentially cause harm to 13,000 individuals, law enforcement officials reported.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office detailed that Dustin McCurry, 41, and Kayly Allman, 33, were apprehended on April 30 following a search of their vehicle that resulted in the discovery of a substantial quantity of drugs during a routine traffic stop in the Clear Creek Access area of South Mountains State Park, as outlined in a post on the department’s official Facebook page.
According to the authorities, multiple items of drug paraphernalia were uncovered in Allman’s possession, alongside approximately 13.59 grams of a crystalline substance that tested positive for methamphetamine. Meanwhile, McCurry was found in possession of drug paraphernalia and roughly 26.96 grams of a substance suspected to be fentanyl.
The sheriff’s office underscored the dangers associated with the seized fentanyl, highlighting that just two of the 26,000 milligrams confiscated could potentially be lethal. Law enforcement officials emphasized that as little as 2 milligrams of fentanyl can prove to be a fatal dose, underscoring the potency and risks associated with the drug.
Both McCurry and Allman were reportedly released on pretrial conditions at the time of the incident, and subsequently, neither of them was granted bond pending a review by the judiciary. The sheriff’s office reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the community by actively addressing illicit drug activities, emphasizing the need for ongoing vigilance and enforcement measures to combat the threat posed by substances like fentanyl.
