Northern Sask. couple gives new meaning to ‘perfect match’ with kidney donation

Crystal Morin-Marinuk and her husband Darwin Morin have been together for a decade, sharing a journey filled with health challenges right from the start. Darwin, a Type 1 diabetic since childhood, was in need of a kidney transplant due to his failing kidneys. As they waited for a suitable donor match, Crystal noticed his health declining, prompting her to get tested as a potential donor.

After undergoing a crossmatch test, the couple received life-changing news – they were a perfect match for kidney donation. The emotional moment of realization brought tears of joy and relief, culminating in a successful transplant procedure. As they navigated through recovery, they also celebrated their love by getting married, marking a significant milestone in their journey together.

With Darwin’s health restored, the couple found a new purpose in helping others facing similar challenges. They established a medical transportation service to assist northern residents in accessing essential medical appointments in Saskatoon, particularly for dialysis treatments. In the absence of a dialysis unit in the north, many patients rely on long journeys for their medical needs.

Despite the physical and emotional toll of the job, Crystal and Darwin remain dedicated to supporting their community. They have formed close bonds with the patients they transport, offering not just a ride but also a sense of companionship and understanding. Although they have faced the loss of some patients along the way, they remain committed to providing this vital service until better healthcare options are available in the north.

Their story is a testament to love, resilience, and the power of giving back to others in need. As they continue their journey of helping those in their community, Crystal and Darwin’s commitment to serving others shines as a beacon of hope and compassion.
