More snow on the way for Christmas Eve in the Maritimes
Winter has arrived with a vengeance in the Maritimes, as another snow system is set to hit the region just in time for Christmas Eve. Following a weekend storm, this new system is bringing more snow and more travel disruptions.
Forecasters are facing some challenges with this system, as it is expected to bring small-scale heavier snow bands that are harder to predict. However, most of the western half of the Maritimes can expect to see snowfall amounts ranging from five to 15 centimetres through Tuesday. Some areas within this region may even see heavier snow bands, with amounts reaching 15 to 25 centimetres or more.
Southern New Brunswick and western Nova Scotia are likely to bear the brunt of the snowfall, with Environment Canada issuing snowfall warnings for these areas. The system is expected to arrive overnight on Monday and continue to drop snow throughout Tuesday.
In some coastal areas, the snow may mix with rain, particularly in Digby, Yarmouth, and Shelburne counties in Nova Scotia, as well as in Grand Manan and Coastal Charlotte County. Despite this, the snow is expected to taper off into flurries by Tuesday evening.
The silver lining in all this is that high pressure will return after the system passes, bringing clearer skies and better travel conditions for Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and beyond. So while the snow may cause some headaches in the short term, the holiday season looks set to be merry and bright in the Maritimes.
