Tragedy Strikes as 14-Day-Old Baby Dies After Dog Attack
A heartbreaking incident has left a community west of Edmonton in shock, as a 14-day-old baby tragically lost their life after being attacked by a dog. The Evansburg RCMP were called to assist emergency medical services early Sunday morning in Entwistle, Alta., located approximately 100 kilometres from Edmonton.
According to police reports, the newborn was bitten by a dog inside a residence, resulting in serious, life-threatening injuries. The baby was swiftly transported by STARS to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton, where medical professionals fought tirelessly to save the infant’s life. Despite their best efforts, the baby was unable to survive the severity of the injuries sustained in the attack.
RCMP Const. Julie-Ann Strilaiff has confirmed that an investigation into the tragic death is currently underway. While details about the specific breed of the dog have not been disclosed, Strilaiff described it as a medium-sized dog that belonged to the residence where the incident occurred. The dog has since been relocated to a facility pending further discussions with Alberta’s chief veterinarian.
In light of this devastating event, authorities are considering potential actions under the province’s Dangerous Dogs Act, which may involve the euthanasia of the dog responsible for the attack. This decision will be made in consultation with the medical examiner and in accordance with legal protocols.
