Post-tropical storm Fiona shut down the Pictou Lodge in 2022. It’s back in business

Pictou Lodge Beach Resort Reopens After Storm Damage

The historic Pictou Lodge Beach Resort is now officially back in business after being severely damaged by post-tropical storm Fiona in September 2022. Brad Hartlin, who co-owns the 99-year-old resort with his brother Mark, announced the exciting news on CBC’s Mainstreet Halifax.

Following the storm damage, the previous owners had to close the business in 2023 as they were unable to continue operating. The resort suffered significant damage, including roofs being blown off cabins. However, the Hartlin brothers were determined to revive the lodge and devised a business plan to make it possible. They consulted with long-time staff members familiar with the property to assess the feasibility of restoring the resort.

As part of the restoration process, some buildings were removed, and others were sold by the previous owner. The resort will now operate on a smaller scale compared to its previous size. While it previously had 80 to 100 rooms, this season it will be running with 41 rooms. Brad Hartlin expressed optimism about the future, stating that there is room for growth if the demand warrants it.

Despite the challenges, the Hartlin brothers have been working diligently to reopen the lodge. They have made significant repairs, including redoing the roof on the main lodge, chimney repairs, and refurbishing the interior floors. The pool, which underwent a complete renovation, has also reopened for guests to enjoy. Additionally, the resort boasts a beach, pond, and trail for visitors to explore and relax in nature.

The reopening of Pictou Lodge has been well-received by the local community, with some former staff members rehired to work at the resort. While the kitchen will reopen next year, this season it will operate as a taphouse. The main lodge has been completely revamped with a nostalgic atmosphere that pays homage to the resort’s rich history and promising future.

Overall, Pictou Lodge Beach Resort is set to offer a rejuvenating escape for guests seeking a tranquil and memorable experience in a natural setting. With a focus on relaxation and enjoyment, the resort aims to provide a serene environment where visitors can unwind and create lasting memories. The Hartlin brothers are excited about the opportunity to revive this iconic property and look forward to welcoming guests back to Pictou Lodge.
