Prime Minister Carney to name new cabinet on Tuesday

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to announce his new cabinet on Tuesday, with a groundbreaking commitment to appointing an equal number of men and women as ministers. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, officiated by Governor General Mary Simon.
Carney, who won the Liberal leadership on March 9, had previously introduced a modest 24-member cabinet just five days after taking office. This was a significant departure from former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s larger 39-member cabinet. While the exact size of Carney’s new cabinet has not been confirmed, it is anticipated to be slightly larger to accommodate newly elected Members of Parliament.
Members of Parliament earn a base salary of $209,800 annually, while the Prime Minister’s salary is double that amount. Cabinet ministers and ministers of state will receive an additional $99,900 on top of their base salary, with secretaries of state in cabinet earning an extra $74,700.
The House of Commons is set to reconvene on May 26, just 28 days after the federal election, marking the second-shortest interval on record since the 1988 federal election. Despite being Prime Minister since March 14, Carney was only elected to the House of Commons on April 28. During the campaign, Carney pledged to take swift action on various issues, promising to address federal barriers to interprovincial trade by Canada Day.
Additionally, Carney has outlined plans to introduce a “Canada Strong Pass,” offering free access to national galleries and museums for youth aged 17 and under, as well as complimentary seats on Via Rail when accompanied by their parents. He has also committed to making national parks and historic sites accessible for free this summer, with reduced pricing for camping facilities.
As Carney prepares to unveil his new cabinet and embark on an ambitious legislative agenda, Canadians are eager to see how his government will deliver on its promises and address pressing national issues. Stay tuned for updates on the latest developments from the Prime Minister’s office.
