Coast Guard to ‘surge assets’ to Gulf of America, other areas

The U.S. Coast Guard has taken immediate action following President Donald Trump’s executive orders to combat illegal migration. Coast Guard Acting Commandant Adm. Kevin Lunday announced the deployment of personnel and equipment to various maritime borders in the United States in support of these orders.

Key areas of focus for the Coast Guard include the waters off Florida to prevent migrants from Haiti and Cuba from entering the U.S., as well as maritime borders around Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Additionally, the agency will target the maritime border between Texas and Mexico in the Gulf of America.

President Trump also signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, marking a significant change in federal recognition. This move underscores the administration’s commitment to protecting America’s borders and territorial integrity.

In addition to supporting executive orders on immigration, the Coast Guard will work closely with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to detect and deter illegal migration, drug smuggling, and other hostile activities before they reach the U.S. border. This collaboration with other government agencies aims to enhance national security and protect the country’s maritime borders.

Following the executive orders, Adm. Linda Lee Fagan was terminated by Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Benjamine Huffman. The dismissal was attributed to Fagan’s failure to address border security threats, inadequate leadership in recruitment and retention, mismanagement of key acquisitions such as icebreakers and helicopters, excessive focus on diversity initiatives, and mishandling of internal investigations into sexual assault cases at the Coast Guard Academy.
