Singh says he will bring down government in March but wants to pass Trump tariff relief first

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to recall Parliament in order to pass legislation that would protect workers and businesses if U.S. President Donald Trump follows through on his promise to impose tariffs on Canadian goods. Singh emphasized the importance of being prepared to fight back against Trump’s actions, stating that Canada needs to protect its jobs and economy.

While Singh still plans to bring an end to Trudeau’s time in office this spring, he is willing to support the government in passing a relief package to address the potential impact of the tariffs. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has also urged Trudeau to reconvene Parliament to address the trade challenges that may arise.

Speaking from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Singh expressed concern that workers should not bear the brunt of the trade war with the U.S. He urged for immediate action to be taken to support those affected by potential tariffs, rather than waiting until the end of March when Parliament is scheduled to resume.

Trudeau has assured that the government will stand by workers and businesses in the event of tariffs being imposed by Trump. A multibillion-dollar relief package is reportedly being drafted, with some measures potentially requiring parliamentary approval. However, the government has stated that it is too early to determine the exact details of the relief package.

Trump’s proposed tariffs could have a significant impact on the Canadian economy, particularly if they include a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian oil. Canadian officials are actively engaging with their American counterparts to address concerns and avoid any detrimental effects on the economy.

Ministers in the Liberal government have indicated that they are exploring various options to support workers and industries that may be affected by the tariffs, including utilizing existing programs and mechanisms without immediately recalling Parliament. The government is closely monitoring the situation and will respond accordingly once more information is available.

As Canada awaits further details on Trump’s tariff plans, efforts are being made to demonstrate Canada’s commitment to addressing border security issues that are of concern to the U.S. This includes sharing video footage to showcase the investments and improvements being made along the border.

In conclusion, Singh’s call for Parliament to be recalled underscores the urgency of the situation and the need for proactive measures to protect Canadian workers and businesses in the face of potential tariffs from the U.S. It remains to be seen how the government will respond to these challenges and what impact they may have on the Canadian economy.
