Spring dose of COVID-19 vaccine available for some starting next week

Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness has announced that individuals at the highest risk for severe illness from COVID-19 are now eligible to book a second dose of the vaccine. This eligibility applies to individuals who have received their last dose or have been infected with COVID-19 at least three months ago. The department has specified that the spring dose of the vaccine will be available from March 31 to June 30, with the children’s shot for those aged six months to 11 years available until June 17.

Appointments for the second dose can be conveniently booked online through the official Nova Scotia vaccination website. The province is urging individuals in specific high-risk categories to consider getting the spring dose. These groups include individuals aged 65 and older, individuals 18 and older residing in long-term care facilities, nursing homes, senior congregate living settings, or residential care facilities, individuals aged six months and older who are moderately to severely immunocompromised due to underlying conditions or treatments, and individuals aged 50 and older who identify as Black, African Nova Scotian, or First Nations.

The recommendations for the spring dose are in line with guidance from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization. It is important to note that individuals who did not receive a dose in the fall or winter can still receive the COVID-19 vaccine, regardless of their risk category. The department emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant for symptoms of COVID-19, which include sudden high fever, headache, general aches and pains, fatigue, weakness, runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, and sore throat.
