Japanese art of flower arrangement on display at Sackville Public Library

Visitors to the Sackville Public Library this weekend are in for a treat as they are greeted with a stunning display of unique flower arrangements placed among the bookshelves. The exhibit showcases the Japanese art of flower arrangement known as ikebana, presented by Miyako Ballesteros, a teacher of the Sogetsu school of the art form in Halifax, along with her talented students.

Ballesteros explains that ikebana differs from most western styles of flower arrangement in that it values negative spaces, asymmetry, and unbalanced beauty. This art form helps individuals develop a deeper appreciation for branches, in addition to flowers. Practitioners of ikebana learn to appreciate the texture and beauty of branches, which adds a unique dimension to their creations.

According to Ballesteros, ikebana is not just a skill but a way of life. Once one delves into the art form, there is no turning back – only motivation to continue learning and creating. Nova Scotia, with its diverse plant life and interesting shapes, provides the perfect backdrop for practicing ikebana.

Ballesteros, who has been teaching ikebana in Halifax for nearly two decades, believes that the art form has the power to change how people perceive the world around them. Media Chalabi, one of Ballesteros’s students who has been practicing ikebana for a decade, attests to this transformation. For Chalabi, ikebana is not just about arranging flowers in a vase; it is a form of meditation that brings her joy and relieves stress.

The exhibit at the Sackville Public Library is an annual event that showcases the talent and creativity of Ballesteros and her students. The final day of the exhibit features a live demonstration at 1 p.m., giving visitors a chance to witness the art of ikebana in action.

Ballesteros mentions that ikebana practitioners can achieve different levels of certification, similar to Japanese martial arts. They have the flexibility to use plants from any season, allowing for endless creativity and expression through their arrangements.

Overall, the display of ikebana at the Sackville Public Library offers a unique and captivating experience for visitors, showcasing the beauty and artistry of this traditional Japanese practice.
