Federal researchers have cleared NBA free agent Malik Beasley of any wrongdoing in their gambling probe, his lawyers informed ESPN.

Attorneys Steve Haney and Mike Schachter stated that they had extensive discussions and meetings with the authorities in the eastern district of New York.

“Months of investigation have concluded that Malik is not a subject of interest in this case,” Haney told ESPN. “Making such claims without any indictment, charges, or convictions has had severe repercussions for Malik. It goes against the presumption of innocence.”

Beasley’s legal team did not immediately respond to requests for comments from the Associated Press, and the office of the U.S. Attorney in Brooklyn declined to provide a statement.

In late June, reports emerged that Beasley was under investigation, following the NBA’s ban on Jontay Porter from Toronto for his involvement in a prop-bet scandal. Porter later pleaded guilty to wire fraud.

The timing of Beasley’s connection to the investigation was unfortunate, as he had signed a one-year, $6 million deal with the Pistons last year in hopes of securing a lucrative contract as a free agent this summer. He became only the fifth player in NBA history to make over 300 three-pointers in a season (a franchise record 319) and averaged 16.3 points for a playoff team.
