Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka moves into Australian Open quarterfinals

Aryna Sabalenka Advances to Australian Open Quarterfinals, Eyes Historic Achievement
Aryna Sabalenka has made her way into the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, putting her just three wins away from a remarkable feat that no woman has accomplished since the 1990s.
The Belarusian player, who is the two-time defending champion, extended her winning streak at Melbourne Park to 18 matches with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory over 14th-seeded Mirra Andreeva in her latest match on Rod Laver Arena.
The last woman to secure three consecutive Australian Open singles titles was Martina Hingis, who achieved this feat from 1997 to 1999.
Following her win against Andreeva, Sabalenka shared a heartwarming moment with her opponent, acknowledged the crowd, captured a photo with her Polaroid camera, and expressed her joy with a thumbs up gesture.
Having won 24 consecutive sets in Melbourne, Sabalenka is in top form and exuding confidence on the court.
“I’m thrilled to have overcome this challenging match in straight sets,” Sabalenka said, reflecting on her victory that lasted just over an hour.
With the exception of the fifth game in the second set, where Andreeva mounted a strong defense to save triple break points, Sabalenka dominated most of the match as the world’s top-ranked player.
Sabalenka only faced her first break point midway through the second set, where she impressively saved three in a single game, showcasing her composure under pressure.
Meanwhile, No. 3 seed Coco Gauff, who has yet to drop a set in this year’s tournament, was set to face off against Tokyo Olympic champion Belinda Bencic in the subsequent match on Rod Laver on Day 8.
On the men’s side, No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz was scheduled to play against Jack Draper in the afternoon session, while Novak Djokovic continued his pursuit of a record 25th Grand Slam singles title in a night match against Jiri Lehecka.
