Titans dismiss GM Ran Carthon after 2 seasons despite big spending spree

The Tennessee Titans made a major front office change on Tuesday, as they fired general manager Ran Carthon after just two seasons with a disappointing 9-25 record. Carthon was initially hired in January 2023 as the franchise’s first Black GM and played a role in the hiring of head coach Brian Callahan a year later.

Team owner Amy Adams Strunk, who had previously fired GM Jon Robinson in December 2022, will now be tasked with finding a new GM to help make decisions regarding the team’s fourth overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft. Chad Brinker, the president of football operations, will lead the search for Carthon’s replacement.

In a statement, Strunk expressed her disappointment in the team’s lack of improvement over the past two seasons, leading to the decision to part ways with Carthon. Despite the struggles, she confirmed that Callahan will remain as the head coach moving forward.

During Carthon’s tenure, the Titans made a number of high-profile signings, including cornerback Chidobe Awuzie, center Lloyd Cushenberry, wide receiver Calvin Ridley, and running back Tony Pollard. While these players made contributions, injuries plagued the team throughout the season, with key players like Awuzie and Cushenberry spending time on injured reserve.

Additionally, the Titans struggled with turnovers and penalties all season, leading to a disappointing 3-14 record. The decision to part ways with Carthon was ultimately based on the team’s lack of progress and the need for a GM who can work closely with the head coach.

In other NFL news, the San Francisco 49ers have reportedly fired special teams coach Brian Schneider after a tumultuous season that saw multiple mishaps on special teams. The team finished with a 6-11 record and missed the playoffs, with several critical errors on special teams contributing to their struggles.

Schneider, who has extensive experience as a special teams coordinator in both college and the NFL, had been with the 49ers for three seasons before his dismissal. The team’s kicking game, in particular, was a point of concern, as kicker Jake Moody struggled with accuracy on field-goal attempts throughout the season.

Overall, the Titans and 49ers are both looking to make changes in their coaching staff and front office in hopes of turning their fortunes around in the upcoming season. Fans will be eagerly watching to see who will be brought in to lead these teams to success in the future.
