Vets group patching border fence pledges vigilance under Trump: ‘There are still gaps’

A group of dedicated U.S. military veterans known as Border Vets has been working tirelessly to address the crisis at the southern border, even as President Donald Trump has made progress in securing the area. Founded by Marine Corps veteran Kate Monroe, Border Vets is a volunteer organization that has been patching up weak points in the border barrier in Southern California.

On a recent rainy day in San Diego County, Monroe invited Fox News Digital to witness the group’s ongoing efforts. Accompanied by nearly a dozen veterans, Border Vets returned to the “San Judas Break,” a notorious gap in the border wall that was once a major entry point for illegal migrants. Despite having previously patched up the hole with razor wire, the group revisited the site to make further improvements and extend the barrier to deter illegal crossings.

The impact of Border Vets’ work, along with increased cooperation from the Mexican government and Trump’s policies, has led to a significant decrease in illegal border crossings. Data from February showed the lowest number of attempted crossings since fiscal 2000, with just 8,300 people making the attempt. This marks a stark contrast to previous years when crossing numbers were much higher.

While the situation at the border has improved, members of Border Vets remain vigilant. They acknowledge that some determined migrants still find a way through the barriers, underscoring the ongoing need for their volunteer efforts. Despite the decrease in illegal crossings, the group continues to monitor and patch up any gaps in the border to prevent a return to the crisis levels seen in recent years.

Overall, Border Vets members are encouraged by the positive changes at the border but emphasize the importance of maintaining security to protect the nation. They believe that an open border policy is detrimental and that a closed-border approach is essential for national security.

As Border Vets continues its vital work, the group remains committed to safeguarding the border and upholding the integrity of the nation’s security. Their dedication and perseverance serve as a testament to the unwavering commitment of U.S. military veterans to protect their country and its borders.
