Washington governor-elect announces subcommittee to combat Project 2025
Washington Governor-elect Bob Ferguson, a Democrat, has taken a bold stance against Project 2025 by forming a subcommittee within his transition team dedicated solely to combating this controversial initiative. Despite President-elect Trump’s attempts to distance himself from Project 2025 during his campaign, Ferguson and his team are preparing for potential challenges that may arise from the Trump Administration.
The subcommittee, co-chaired by Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates CEO Jennifer Allen and King County Councilmember Jorge L. Barón, aims to safeguard the rights and freedoms of Washingtonians in the face of potential threats posed by Project 2025. Ferguson emphasized the importance of ensuring that Washington continues to progress regardless of federal-level circumstances.
Project 2025, orchestrated by the conservative Heritage Foundation and supported by former Trump administration officials, outlines a series of right-wing policy recommendations for the President’s second term. These recommendations include replacing civil service employees with loyalists, abolishing the Department of Education, criminalizing pornography, cutting funding for Medicaid and Medicare, and promoting Christian values within the government.
Despite Trump’s initial disassociation from Project 2025, key figures involved in the initiative have been appointed to crucial positions within his administration, indicating a shift in his stance. This move has raised concerns among critics who view Project 2025 as an authoritarian and Christian nationalist agenda that could undermine civil liberties.
Allen expressed her honor in serving on Ferguson’s transition team and co-chairing the subcommittee, emphasizing the importance of championing reproductive rights and protecting the rights of all Washingtonians. Barón, an immigrant and advocate for marginalized communities, echoed Allen’s sentiments and highlighted the need to safeguard the rights of vulnerable populations in the face of potential federal threats.
As Ferguson’s office continues to develop policy priorities for his first 100 days in office, the subcommittee remains focused on advocating for the protection of civil liberties and ensuring that Washington remains a beacon of progress and inclusivity. Stay tuned for further updates on the subcommittee’s initiatives and policy proposals as they work towards safeguarding the rights of all Washington state residents.
